It’s not about you

“For everything, absolutely everything above and below, visible and invisible…everything got started in him and finds it’s purpose in him”

-Colossians 1:16

You might be thinking, “What do you mean it’s not about me? What are you talking about?”

I’m talking about your life. Your life isn’t about you. I repeat, your life isn’t about you!

I’ve been reading the book “The Purpose Driven Life” for the past few weeks and listening to some of the audio selections that are online that go along with the different chapters of the book. Before I get too far into this post, I want to give you a few things to think about, some things that I’ve been thinking a lot about since I began reading this book.

1. If God asked you to give him reasons why he should let you live longer, what would your reasons be?

2. If God reviewed the last 15 years of your life right now, and that’s how he decided if he should give you more time in this life, would he give you more time?

So, are you willing to use the rest of your life the way God wants you to use it? If God gave you 15 more years to live would you center those next 15 years on Him?

Taking into account that your life isn’t yours, it’s God’s I’d like to quickly go through some things that he wants us to do.

  • God wants you to use your life and center it around Him. He wants you to live a life that brings glory to Him, and a life that leads people to Him. You were made for God by God. Think about it…the greatest commandment he’s telling us to love Him!

“Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” - Matthew 22:37

You can center your life around God by worshipping Him. By praising Him through everything, good and bad.

  • God also wants us to connect with other believers, this is called fellowship.

“Those who believed... were baptized and added to the church...  They joined with the other believers and committed themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship... They worshiped together regularly at the Temple... and met in small groups in homes..." Acts 2:41-42, 46

God said that it was not good for man to be alone, so getting involved with a community of other believers who are on the same spiritual journey as you is important.

  • This leads into the next thing God wants for us, and that is to cultivate spiritual maturity. God doesn’t want us to just check boxes, he wants us to grow, and he wants us to grow in relationship with Him. How do you become spiritually mature? By maneuvering through tests and trials you are faced with while putting your trust in Him. The more spiritually mature you become, the closer to living our your purpose in this life you become. You begin to realize that God’s purpose for your life is greater than any problem you go through and you realize that every problem you are faced with has a purpose. We live in a fallen world, things aren’t perfect here and they never will be. This life that we are living is to prepare us for the life we will experience in Heaven.

  • God wants us to make a contribution with our lives. He wants us to serve others, love others, and bring the kingdom of heaven to our communities. He also wants us to reach those who don’t know Him. He wants us to tell people who He is and what He did for us. We can do this not only through our words, but through the way we live. The greatest gift you can give someone is to help them come to know God. You’ll be in Heaven because someone took the time to tell you about the good news of Jesus Christ. Every single person you cross paths with will spend eternity somewhere and the way your live your life and the way you speak to others and what you say can influence where. Who is going to be in Heaven because of you?

God created us to do something with our lives, so what are you doing? What are the reasons you deserve more time? Every single person has a message, a mission and a ministry in this world! What are yours?
